One of the fastest developing backcountry skiing destinations in the world, Mamay, is located in the heart of Siberian mountains. It’s getting its prominence thanks to the easiness in getting there (4 hours from city called Irkutsk which is in Russia). Mamay is also known for its friendly backcountry skiing community, amazingly untouched and beautiful nature, great quality of snow, and a lot of fun.
Have you ever done backcountry skiing with the view on the deepest lake in the world? If not, this is exactly what you’ll experience – the way to the summits is spectacular, lake Baikal, will be seen almost from all of the possible routes. By the way, you can skate on the lake or drive a car since it freezes fully during the winter (around February timeframe).
Throughout the whole duration of the trip, you’ll be accompanied by our professional backcountry skiing guides. They grew up in the area, skied there since they started to walk, and know every stone and tree in Mamay. In their company you’ll feel like home.
The backcountry skiing experience is set up based on the group level and aspirations. You can choose from full day backcountry options to half day.
At your requests, dogs sledging with our amazing Siberian huskies, skating on the lake, snow showing, and snowmobiles can be organised. You’ll love it!
We’ll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel Courtyard Marriott for a “Welcome to Backcountry skiing” meeting. Then we’ll take a meandering evening walk through Irkutsk’s most charming riverside parts of the city, and get acquainted with one another over dinner together.
Irkutsk is one of the largest cities in Eastern Siberia, located by the Angara river (the only river that flows out of Lake Baikal). The city is known for its historical heritage, one of the oldest universities – Irkutsk State University and proximity to wonder of the world – Lake Baikal – the deepest and cleanest lake in the world.
8 am we’ll meet as a group in the lobby of the hotel Courtyard Marriott and will head towards Mamay. Let the exciting journey begin! On the way we’ll stop by to have a lunch in the panoramic cafe by lake Baikal and enjoy the hospitality of locals and delicacies of Russian cuisine.
After nice lunch, we’ll keep heading towards Mamay and on the way you’ll see famous Trans-Siberian Railroad going along the shores of Lake Baikal. Half of the way we’ll enjoy the scenic views of winter on Lake Baikal.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Our morning breakfast aroma will wake you up around 7-8 am. 9 am is departure time from the hut. Today is our exploration day to make sure everyone is comfortable with the snow, slopes, weather, etc. We’ll backcountry few close by mountains and should be back to the hut for lunch. Evening is perfect for Russian bania and meet up with the locals who also ski in there. Let’s sleep early today since tomorrow is the big day!
An unforgettable trip to the high Siberian wonderland of snow and specifically the Mamay summit is the true highlight of a visit to Irkutsk. Mamay is a 5023 feet (1531 meter) peak known for its 360 overview of the mountain area around. The views are stunning from the top. The way up is picturesque and if we’re luck we’ll meet Siberian wolf (just joking in here, they don’t show up usually during the day in here). Camaraderie and stories from our guides on the way will make the way up quick and fun. Today, we’re planning to ski in three different locations including Mamay peak. Get ready for fun!
It’s a beautiful day in Mamay valley. This morning you’ll wake up with coffee aroma almost brought to your bed. The huts where you’ll stay are pretty cozy, wooden houses, with place to sleep, eat, and restroom. Great accommodation considering we’re in the wild forest with no infrastructure around. Please take your power banks to keep the phone charged and ready for out of this world pictures. Today our group will explore the backcountry skiing slopes opposite from the place we’ve been yesterday.
We loved skiing with you. By now, we all exchanged the facebook profiles, phone numbers, have so many selfies and instagram ready pictures. Besides, the civilisation is waiting for us – WiFi, cars, roads, offices. We have our usual Russian breakfast (excited? =)) and start getting ready to leave. The good news – you can ski down almost to the parking lot. We packed everything we brought and gradually head back. Final picture all together and wohoo, enjoy the spirit of Siberian backcountry skiing. We should be reaching Marriott Hotel around 4pm. Of course, we will stop by on the way to have lunch with the last view on Lake Baikal – majestic and mighty. Thanks for being with us and we’ll see you next time!
One of the best freeride experiences ever! Highly recommend. Great memories forever, great friends!
